Strange x-axis problem using Marlin 2 (no replies)

Using Marlin on a CNC build. Was using Marlin 1.1.9 via Arduino IDE 1.8.10 and all worked OK. But when I try similar config in Marlin 2 the X axis hardly steps (instead of executing say 2000 steps for a 10mm move it barely steps at all (and sometimes not at all). The Y and Z motors operate as normal. The setup is a mega2560 with RAMPS 1.4 but with external (TB6600 based) drivers with Nema23 motors - the drivers simply connect directly to the enable, pulse and direction pins on the ramps driver headers and to +5v and ground. The other oddity is that when tested on a similar setup but with onboard DRV8825s and Nema 17s all works fine. It leads me to wonder if there is something in Marlin 2 that is interfering with the stepping of the X axis when there are external drivers or if there may be some remnant in EEPROM that is causing an issue with Marlin 2 (I have tried enabling and disabling EEPROM as well as sending M500/M502). BTW if I go back to Marlin 1.1.9 it all works again. I would like to use some of the features in Marlin 2 so ideally I would like to find out what is wrong. Marlin 2 config.h and config.adv.h attached. Where I could I mirrored the 1.1.9 settings but Marlin 2 does have other entries which I simply left as they were. I used Notepad++ to compare and create new configs. Perhaps there is an alternative way to use the old 1.1.9 configs (simply copying them across throws up a multitude of errors). BTW compiling with Visual Studio result is same as using Arduino IDE.
